How To Talk About Hardships

One of the questions I often get from students is how to talk about hardships and that MCAS states that you certainly can talk about special hardships challenges or obstacles that may have influenced your educational pursuits or comment on significant fluctuations in your academic record that are not explained elsewhere well two comments one often times in an application a couple of pages from the front there’s a spot where they will say use this space if you’re so inclined to discuss any extenuating circumstances and this is where you can write anything you want but you keep it short to the point you get on it and off it and I will say you’re right as a success story okay if you put it in the essay it is again very very short on it. And often and a success story not a long diatribe on difficulties endured what we want to say here is that you’ve conquered those difficulties so for instance you may explain but now apologize for any weaknesses or unusual aspects Oh like maybe see discrepancies between your GPA and your admissions test and you may say you know I too am in loss to explain this discrepancy or you know I was working a second job whatever but I trained my students to write uphill write uphill in a way that you create a success story you were challenged you comprar the problem and you succeeded so uphill is the big point here the other thing I’d like to come back to research for just a minute because many many students if not most have difficulty talking about this and oftentimes as I say students will say I don’t want to be a scientist so I don’t want to put research in or research doesn’t want I’m most interested in so I’ll put it at the end no you actually want to end on a high note so they say just I did research which is kind of the give me 10 points attitude or I did research this was the title of my poster that again doesn’t tell me you learned anything.

It doesn’t tell me you’ll learn analytical thinking and a value of research is that it teaches analytical thinking that’s why the admissions committee values it it may not be required but we value it and because analytical thinking is actually the basis of diagnosis so can you critically think can you analytically think so when you talk about research you have to do it in a credible manner so I had the opportunity to work with dr. Teresa de Waal in the department of obstetrics and gynecology who studies low birth weight infant mortality who did you work with where are they at what’s the broad focus of the research I can’t tell you how many students never name the professor who granted them the privilege of conducting research in their laboratory now you have to talk the talk and walk the walk this is what you did this is what you found this is why it’s important not just the techniques.
